A Journey to Alamut: The Fortress of the Assassins
High in the Alborz Mountains, Alamut Fortress commands both awe and mystery. Known as the stronghold of the Assassins, it carries legends of secret societies and daring histories, a relic of Persian resilience.
Alamut Castle, a historic and mysterious fortress nestled in the Alborz mountains, is located northeast of Gazorkhan village in Qazvin Province. This fortress, which is built on a rocky mountain at an altitude of 2163 meters above sea level, is known as one of the most important historical castles in Iran due to its strategic location and unique defensive architecture.
With its high walls, watchtowers, and winding corridors, Alamut Castle was not easily conquered. There was only one narrow and winding entrance to the castle, which made access to it very difficult. In addition, the presence of deep cliffs around the castle doubled its security.
Alamut Castle is famous for its connection to Hassan Sabbah, the leader of the Ismaili sect. By choosing this castle as his base, Hassan Sabbah was able to rule parts of Iran for several decades and have a significant impact on Iranian history and culture
